One of my favorite movie genres is "films set in NYC during the 70s." The graffiti'd subways! The empty lots with trash can bonfires! The Mayor Lindsay references!

Today I watched one of the best, for the first time: The French Connection.

What a cool flick. Not that much really happens, and in the end, the anti-hero (Gene Hackman's "Popeye Doyle") kinda makes good, but not really. You couldn't get away with that in an action drama of today--the slouchy, ruggedly individualistic cop has to win, and there has to be some big pay-off to redeem everyone's lack of faith in him.

I've always loved Gene Hackman, and it was good to finally see him in his quintessential role. He's not a good-looking fellow, but he has his appeal.

The Damn Lovelys put on a flawless show at Cafe 111 last night. They can handle sweet country waltzes and twangy pop and Nez covers and raucous stompers alike. I look forward to hearing their Mountain Stage debut, airing sometime in April.
