So you're saying the artist and record label can't "own" it, but then you turn around and own it yourself? That shit ain't right. You're really just saying that you think you shouldn't have to pay for it.

--Ted Leo on file sharing, echoing my thoughts closely.

Ring Out was a great idea--kudos to the organizers and volunteers!--but the execution was a little loose, and as such the impact was minimal. It's difficult to organize something involving so many people, without any kind of rehearsal or preparation, and it felt less like a meditative/musical event and more like a bunch of people milling around.

Some people brought their own bells, but most used the tiny bells handed out by volunteers. The best sight gag of the day was passing a little girl--clearly the daughter of one of the peddlers working the site--playing the shell game with three bells.

As uneventful as it was, at least it was completely peaceful. One of my companions for the event, Sharps, knew a couple of the cops working security, and we all knew some of the volunteers, so there was a nice sense of balance between all the players.

Although I will probably not bear a pall, I may simply go watch the 1000 Coffins. Or the Million Billionaire March...And then there's the Bush Bash in Brooklyn, although the entertainment looks lame.

As I was saying to some friends before, "abandoned Yahoo account" is one of the saddest expressions in the English language.

Relatedly, I'm back online at home finally. My beloved iBook has a new hard drive, is loaded up with the very gangsta OS X ("Panther!") and has a whole new attitude.
