My vote for lamest year ever: 2002. Aside from its being palindromic, it had nothing going for it. I mean, c'mon.

I don't mean to damn them with faint praise, but what's not to like about the new Luna album? Supposedly it will be their last. Standout track, the exuberant "Buffalo Boots."

I can be more passionate about Tom Perrotta's latest (though hardly new) novel, Little Children.

I've been on the Perrotta train since his first book of short stories, which compassionately and plainly captures the suburban New Jersey experience. This novel carries on that tradition.

For the uninitiated, Perrotta reads like a more ornate Denis Johnson, or like Michael Chabon without a thesaurus. Probably the most apt comparison is with fellow Jerseyan Gary Krist who shares a regular-guy outlook and mild-mannered sense of humor.
