I was thinking about the band Scout the other day. Their 2003 album remains a big favorite, and I listen to it fairly regularly, and when I do, I think, "hardly anyone plays this kind of music anymore," just simple guitar pop with pretty (but substantive, not "ye ye" pretty, not bubblegum punk) female vocals and riffs and good melodies.

And today I've discovered the Heartless Bastards, who are a mite heavier than Scout but mining the same territory. The vocals are not quite so upfront, and the playing isn't as tight, but there's something similarly unpretentious about them. Quite rocking.
