There are many reasons to rent the new-ish DVD of Smithereens: to see a flawed but basically solid little movie about the sorrow of talentless ambition...to witness a charismatic and nuanced performance by an actress who never went on to do much else...and a bad peformance by a punk semi-legend. But the real payoff is seeing Chris Noth in a non-speaking role as a transvestite that lasts about 5 seconds.

In other film news, The Squid and the Whale is just as good as you've heard it is: a smart, painfully accurate depiction of adolescence featuring two great kid actors and the always-swell Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney. (Bonus points for being set in da Slope.)

Forty Shades of Blue is interesting and has a vivid Rip Torn at its center, but is a major downer of a flick.

2046, which is about to leave NYC for good, and which you've probably seen already, is beautiful, dreamy, and sweetly sad.
