If you have any nostalgia for the Clinton era, you may enjoy Built to Spill's new one...not a huge leap from the scruffy/melodic stuff they were doin' in the 90s, but a decent listen, generally.

A happy birthday shout-out to Miss Liza Wonderwheel, whose other band is playing at Crash Mansion tonight. Come out and support the Larch as they play this new-to-them venue.

After a really pleasant day traipsing around Park Slope and its zoo yesterday, I had a hankerin' to see The Squid and the Whale (new on DVD this--or last?--week).

I liked it a lot the first time I saw it, and this time around I'm thinking it's a damn masterpiece. The dialogue manages to be both naturalistic and poetic at once, and the perfomances are all perfectly understated.

And if, like me, you saw it originally in a theater with crappy sound, you owe it to yourself and Noah Baumbach to hear all the parts, cuz there's not a tossed-off line amongst them.
