2008-09-08 - 10:55 a.m. Saw The Pool this weekend, followed by a Q&A with director Chris Smith. Both were totally delightful. The movie is relaxed and sweet and intimate, and yet the main conceit is pretty focused--it very much feels like reading a short story, and it is, in fact, based on one, although the original fiction is set in Iowa and this is set in a small town in Goa, India. Even if the themes of fathers-and-children and abundance-vs-deprivation don't lure you in, the film's basic beauty and travelogue qualities are a good draw. The cast of (mostly) non-actors is perfect. Here's an illuminating interview with Smith. It's the SheGees! I have a new joke! Q. Where do fundamentalist Christians go to buy their supplies?
