"ShockHeaded Peter" actually played (albeit very briefly) in L.A. a couple
of years ago and seemed fascinating, but I missed it -- will definitely
catch it if it makes its' way here again.'Open Water' plays like a
student film to me, in that it goes nowhere but nonetheless has a
certain level of craft to it.From what I can gather about its'
making, it was put together by a largely amateur crew, and on the basis
of the reception it received at Sundance, got released as a feature.
I know what you mean about the 'look' of digital video, but it's not always bad.
"Open Water" was shot on DVcam, which is basically a prosumer format,
as distinguished from the High Definition Digital Video cameras used in
shooting films like "Session 9", "Russian Ark" and of course, "Star Wars II:
Attack of the Clones".This Hi-Def DV format actually looks
pretty good to me.

OW has a student-film feel to it, definitely.
As for the video, for the most part, it looks OK, but whenever there's quick movements, it looks blurry. It's just a little off-putting. I noticed that in the Rebecca Miller movie Personal Velocity, but that was a better film, so it didn't jar as much.

This kind of digital video is off-putting to me also. I gave it some leeway because of its origins, but I had a lot of problems with Open Water. It did make me tense though.
