I've read a good-sized hunk of a Murakami short story collection called "The Elephant Vanishes" and thought he was a really skilled author -- he reminded me a bit of David Foster Wallace, except that, unlike the latter, Murakami actually seems to have a subject matter; Wallace just seems to circle one continuously, without ever coming in for a landing.

The commentary by Billy Ray and Chuck Lane is also really super, although when they started talking about what happened to Michael Kelly, I sort of lost it.
