1. The Man Who Loved Children by Christina Stead; Celebration by Mary Lee Settle; and the Orton Diaries (Joe Orton)
2. Literary fiction, whatever the hell that means.
3. I come from a family of library outlaws (lotsa overdue books), so I buy books.
4.This is too hard to answer. I like Auster, also Faulkner, and Jane Austen.
5.I hated Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but I didn't really finish it. I used to slog through stuff I hated, but I gave that up a few years ago after I calculated roughly how many books I could squeeze in before I die.

1. the only book I've read more than once (twice) is "Lolita" and that was pretty much because I heard Martin amis say he'd read it eight (8) times, I could probably go back to a lot of good books I read when I was a kid, and not even recognise them, but I figure I'll never read all the good books even once, so why go back?
2. I'd have to say that literary fiction thing too, I'm sort of looking for stuff that can't be stuffed into a genre, but I do sort of like a hint of magical realism, or whatever it's called, if it's done just right.
3. I buy, and it's almost time for yard sale season ,when a little knowledge of authors can mean big savings on quality prose.
4.robertson davies, boyle, amis, russo, updike, welsh, saramago... I don't know.
5. mostly I don't hate, I just lose interest, but I hated "a confederacy of dunces"

I wombat: I weep at the fact that you hated "A Confederacy of Dunces," which is one of my all-time favorites. Boo hoo! 1. I generally don't reread, but I have read some of Marcia Muller's mysteries 2-3 times each. 2. Mysteries, but I also like regular ol' fiction (not necessarily literary). Things with strong plots. 3. Libraries all the way, baby. I don't have the wall space for any more bookcases. Plus, as mentioned above, I don't reread. 4. Marcia Muller, Bill Pronzini, Peter Robinson, Sara Lewis, Anne Tyler, Michael Chabon (though I'm creeped out by MC's wife's "TMI" articles in Salon.com and the recent one in the NYT, about how much she loves having sex with MC.) 5. I'm in a book club so sometimes I wind up reading pretty awful books because they're assigned. Most recently, we read one called Dead Game by Gerald Hammond that I despised. But I did finish it, so I could trash it in our group.

1) Most read all time is probably The Witches of Karres by James H. Schmitz. In the last few years, though, I think I've read A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin 7 times, which seems excessive even to me. 2) Very catholic tastes, tending toward lots of SF/Fantasy and Mysteries, though. 3) Libraries mostly, with a few exceptions for stuff I know I'll reread over and over again. No room for more books, and the money I save buys more sweet, sweet alcohol. 4) John Irving, John Sandford, George R. R. Martin, David Weber, Sheri Tepper, James Ellroy are the current ones whose new book gets read first out of a stack. 5) The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy. Very interesting plot and good characters, but it's written in this experimental staccato prose style that made me want to gouge out my eyes. I was able to finish it, but I could never get into a rhythm with it, and every page was an effort.

Our fears have been realized. Nicole Kidman to play Diane Arbus. Wonder what kind of nose they'll dream up for her.

1 - i don't reread much these days, but i recently re-read tom reamy's _blind voices_, which i know i read several times in mah yute. i was relieved that it was still pretty good. 2 - lit fiction/s-called "slipstream"/sf/mystery 3 - i'm a "recovering" buyer 4 - hah very hah. impossible. i have liked austen and hammett for many years, but i could put fifty names here. 5 - i slogged through "bush's brain" and "word freaks" despite finding them more annoying the further i read.
