I very much like what I've heard of Extraordinary Machine, and I loved the first album. I haven't heard the ones in between. I think it's disgusting that Epic won't release it. That article makes it seem like emulating Tom Waits is a bad thing! I know we're supposed to be all blase about this kinda thing now: "well, it's a major label, what do you expect, they want to make money." But it's still depressing. There was a time when a major labels would atleast allow artists who've ALREADY SOLD MILLIONS OF RECORDS FOR THEM, THANK YOU a little artistic freedom, for crissakes. There's no loyalty, no willingness to allow the artist to try something new.

Exactly.

Technically, it's your 6th nephew, but who's counting, besides me.

I coined a phrase for times such as these: "nibling," meaning niece or nephew. So, true, he's my sixth nephew and eighth nibling.

"Nibling"! I love it! Re Fiona Apple: the writer said "apples-to-apples" w/o pointing out the obvious pun. Hurk. I've heard five or six tracks from the unreleased album, and they're pretty good. I only knew a single or two from before, liked 'em okay, but gave up on her as impossibly precious when the second album's title was released... Idiots. Funny how indie labels - even large ones like Matador, Merge, or Sub Pop - manage to make money on relatively low sales. Then again, proceeding numerically from 2.7m to 917,000 to...350,000 or so? Still: that'd be a lot for an indie. I'll say it again: if yr a musician, no freakin way you should sign with a major. They just don't care.
