Fight the urge. It's just a regular sitcom - setup, insulty punchline, repeat.

Best parody of SitCom was the Simpsons Spin-off Showcase. The segment was The Love-matic Grampa. Filled with exactly that: Setup, insult, Gasps from crowd, and more fake laughs.

Sometimes inexplicable urges are meant to be resisted. Watch whatever's on adult swim tonight instead -- it's bound to be funnier.

Ya know, I'm just waiting for my (our) friend Miles to come in here and bust some heads. I know he really likes Raymond. C'mon, Miles, bring it!

I'm not going to stick my neck out too far, but I will say this: Raymond has a dark streak that distinguishes it mightily from other sitcoms. I always appreciated that they rarely showed the kids, or had storylines about the kids - unlike most family sitcoms - and also that there was rarely a "moment of shit" at the end (that is, where everyone learns a valuable lesson and hugs and cries). Or, if there was one, it was often mitigated by some embarrassing Oedipal squicky moment, or some more ugly behavior. And the family tensions just continued, like real life; they didn't get all resolved and warm and fuzzy. I did go through a period of watching Raymond in syndication, but I have to confess that I finally stopped, because it was too dark! I realized, I want my sitcoms to act as sedatives. I don't want them to stir up bad memories. I want escape.

I just read the second post (where Paula doesn't watch Raymond) first, so I missed Baby Party's excellent comment here and posted almost exactly the same thing over there. Yep, I love Raymond in all its evil, mean-spirited glory.
