When I was a teenager, my best friend's parents always had white box wine in the fridge, and they were actually rather sophisticated folks! It had a little plastic spout, and the family called it "tit wine" because of the spout's resemblance to a breast and nipple.

There was a review of the new "premium" boxed wines (as opposed to the 5 gallon boxes of Almaden or whatever) in the SF Chronicle Wine section a few weeks ago, and the critic concluded that most of them are good values. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be catching on here -- at least, Trader Joe's stopped carrying them. However, I think they're great because the wine stays fresh so long (a plus for singles or those of us whose spouses don't drink alcoholic beverages).

When I was in Sweden last month, I was amazed to see the incredible variety of non-bottled wine available -- it's even sold in TetraPaks (the same packaging that soy and rice milks are sold in here). I hope Americans eventually get hip to these alternate forms of packaging!

Cool! I think they should sell 'em in juice boxes with a little straw, for lunchtime drinkin'.

Another advantage to the boxed wine is that you can bring it to outdoor concerts, where bottles are often forbidden.

Gin 'n' juiceboxes. Talk about the good stuff the kids go for...
