And it has the advantage over the mojito that it's easier to make. How do you feel about the gin and tonic vs. the vodka and tonic? Like my late grandmother, I always feel that most bartenders make 'em with too much gin and not enough tonic. I'd rather have a taller glass and a ratio of about 1/4 gin to 3/4 tonic. And, of course, a lime slice.

Scientific research? Where can I get a grant for that kind of research?

I like the tonic drinks, too, but I'm firmly in the gin camp. I actually like the taste of a good gin, something which appalls certain members of my social circle.

I like the gin, too, Sue & Alan...The ideal ratio of hooch-to-tonic depends on who's buyin', and how bad my malaria is that day.

I drove my best friend's car into a brick wall when I was 18, drunk on five Happy Hour gin-and-tonics. I was going about 10 miles an hour. It was an old car (so old I actually totalled it). And about 20 of my closest friends were watching and laughing as it happened. So the taste of gin brings back a powerful memory of humiliation and shame. In addition, my parents once received a gallon of gin as a Christmas present. They weren't big drinkers, and ended up using it to defrost the driveway one cold morning!

This sounds like something Ned Flanders might do as Barney looks on despairingly.

And then Barney would get down and lick the driveway. (I should explain that in the South, we don't have rock salt for this task. When it's icy, we just slide around into each other like bumper cars.)
