I agree with the premise that weighing pros and cons in a relationship is not a good way to go about it. I've done that, and I would end up with someone with all kinds of admirable qualities, who I wasn't in love with and who was kinda driving me crazy - once I allowed myself to finally see it. To greatly oversimplify things, I would say my approach has eventually evolved to "Are the pros things I absolutely can't live without, and are the cons the things I can't live with?" and "Am I happy? Am I in love?" Until I boiled it down to that, I was eternally dissatisfied in my romantic relationships. And now...going on five years, so far so good. Knock on wood!

There's a show on the Ovation channel that has lots of bands performing live. Watched one the other day and saw Tom Petty, Leonard Cohen, REM, Blondie, Johnny Cash, etc, and they were all newer performances. The only con is there were not enough new bands represented.

I agree with your thoughts on OGWT. When will they put out Don Kirshner's Rock Concert? One episode had Cheap Trick, 1977, between 1st and 2nd albums, they got to play, like, 7 songs, it was the rockingest thing evah. I was in Best Buy today and every show ever is out on DVD. I hear they are going to put out a DVD of Peter Jennings World News Tonight. Sweet merciful hayzoos.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Peter Jennings okay, but who in the world would buy a DVD of his broadcasts? Maybe someone who had a crush on him (which I did, for about 2 weeks in the 80s)?

I was about to post that Rory Gallagher used to jump on a trampoline on stage, but then I remembered that that was Nils Lofgren.

Rory Gallagher, Nils Lofgren, Rick Derringer, they're all the same guy.

Austin City Limits? I've seen good performances on that show and it's taped before a live audience which I would think would bring better results than a performance done for a camera in a studio. Also, I recently found out that the King Biscuit Flower Hour is releasing their archives under their own imprint: http://www.kingbiscuit.com/

I think I've seen that show a few times--good stuff. Is it on cable? OGWT performances seem to have been taped in front of a studio audience, so there's definitely some of that in-concert feel. KBFH stuff looks great. I used to listen to that show in bed on Sunday nights, dreading going to school on Monday.

Austin City Limits and KBFH is great for geezers like us, but it does seem to me that the teens of today don't have what we had in terms of a weekly concert show of current bands, similar to Kirshner or Midnight Special or OGWT or even Night Flight! (80s, hosted by David Sanborn - super-weird juxtapositions, including the the Residents with Conway Twitty..)

Someone on a mailing list I subscribe to posted about the Jennings video, and it is not a DVD of his broadcasts. It's "a two-hour special reflecting on the remarkable life and career," featuring interviews with his colleagues, etc. I don't think there's much of a market for old newscasts.

Oh, don't try tellin' someone who came of Rawk Age in Washington DC in the late 70's that Nils Lofgren can be lumped in with those guys! Those other guys weren't in Grin! Those other guys weren't recruited for lead guitar in the E Street Friggin' Band! Those guys didn't come this close to replacing Mick Taylor in the Stones! Those other guys didn't write "Keith Don't Go" OK I'll stop now. (Nils rules.)

Actually, I found the rebroadcasts of Jennings on 9/11 and the Challenger to be extremely compelling. Nils also played quite a bit with Neil Young. Not to beat a crazy dead horse, but who else in Rock can put on their resume "Was sought to serve as lead guitarist for bands that included Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young"?

What do you have against Rory Gallagher? He was awesome and looked like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Flasshe - 2005-08-18 13:50:34
Who's Rory Gallagher? His website is ugly!

IR - 2005-08-18 13:58:30
So, I heard that Rory Gallagher at one time was asked to join the Stones (to replace Brian Jones) but declined for some reason. It's an interesting story - anyone know if there's any truth in it? He's a great guitarist but it seems like it would've been a bit strange to have an Irish guy in that band.

Rory Gallagher? I think he's that guy whose whole act is basically smashing his guitar. Or maybe I'm confused.

Perhaps you're thinking of Metallagher!
