Yeah, I don't know what people were complaining about, I thought season 4 of Six Feet Under was great (oddly enough, I think season 1 is the weakest; too much exposition!). In an earlier SFU-centric blog entry, you talked about how much the fan base seemed to hate the episode "That's My Dog" (the one where David gets kidnapped); I work for a TV production company and most of my fellow editors (and people around the office in general) felt that it was one of the best episodes of the whole series. I think the fans were just freaked out by the intensity of it, and the fact that characters could actually die on that show (unlike 99.99% of all other serial TV). It seems to me that SFU is pretty unique in all of TV; it was never about making the audience 'feel good', and it wasn't afraid to have a distinct beginning, middle and end. What's not to like?

Wait'll you see the finale of the last season. It's the only episode I ever even saw, and it was quite affective, even though I didn't exactly know who many of the characters are. I'd like to see the whole series, though.

We only have one more disc to go on Season 4, but overall I think it's much stronger than Season 3, which was bogged down by the tiresome Olivier. "That's My Dog" was really well done -- gripping, horrifying, and true-feeling in the sense of a situation getting worse by such small increments that you can't figure out how you could have extricated yourself. I'd be glad if Kathy Bates became the dead guy du jour, however. Though her annoying ghost would probably appear on every episode!

Ha! I can't stand Olivier, either, but I like the Kathy Bates character (Bettina) for this main reason: she is kind and respectful (if sarcastic) to Ruth, and seems to appreciate her. We all need a friend like that.
