I saw 'Kontroll' recently and thought it was a very stylish, well-done thriller; also largely character-driven, which is unusual for that genre. Cronenberg's 'A History of Violence' is another such example, and maybe the best movie I've seen this year so far. 'Thumbsucker' is as good and contemporary a coming-of-age story as you're likely to see, an impressive feature film debut from Mike Mills. And lest I forget, Guy Maddin's most autobiographical and experimental work, 'Cowards Bend the Knee', has just become available on DVD -- an invaluable addition to the collection, if you're inclined to collect. The Ronca Film Report signs out for this week.
