I've read Carr's 'The Alienist' and enjoyed it, but it does seem ripe for a send-up; and Chris Elliot seems the right man for the job. His 'FDR: A One-Man Show' is priceless, and his days on the Letterman show were the funniest of the show's run. Will pick this up as soon as it hits Trade Paperback (my preferred book-buying format). Did I mention own Cabin Boy on DVD? IS there any hope for me?

Chris Elliot is beyond criticism in my eyes. I loved Cabin Boy, I loved his earlier "memoir" written with his Dad, I loved his TV show. So the question is, is there hope for a world wherein this man is not a bigger star? (I read the Alienist, too, and thought it was great!)

Your description of Mandolin Bros. reminded me that last year, on our visit to our SoCal friends, we ended up at a David Lindley show at McCabe's - a fine, intimate venue that, during daylit hours, is a crampacked store full of instruments of all types. It was indeed rather drool-inducing, although as a strictly amateur musishin, no way could I ever justify spending anywhere near the bucks required to own some of the more beautiful instruments on display.
