A couple of people have recommended Mievelle's stuff to me -- but I've always been suspicious of writers whose novels are as thick as telephone books; even when they're good, it's almost always a sign of a lack of judicious editing on the author's part (for example, Neal Stephenson; his early novels were simply longish, but his later ones are simply chock full of stuff that has no right being there. 'Cryptonomicon', nonetheless, is worth the effort of sludging through the extraneous prose). The fact that he has released a book of short stories seems reason enough to give him a look-see, though.

Word, Tom. Or, more accurately, "wordy"!

I usually agree with you about long books, but I can attest that Perdido Street Station is pretty filler-free and page-turn-o-riffic. He wears his M. John Harrison influence on his sleeve (mentions him in the dedication, even), but you could do a lot worse.
