Not bad, but i'm not sure how you can have a conversation about Phil Collins-fronted Genesis and NOT metion that unintentionally-racist gem, and Top 20 Hit, "Illegal Alien." EVERYBODY! "Eetz No Fu-un / Beeing an Eel-eegal A-lee-u-uhn!" Classic.

Invisible Touch pops into my head on an almost daily basis these last two or so weeks. Can you make it go away?

"Illegal Alien" is terrible, and I was going to mention it, but I thought the less said, the better. I like them all the way through about 1/2 of GENESIS, but INVISIBLE TOUCH really blows.

Phil's first solo album, despite the overplayed "In the Air Tonight" and the fact it spawned the whole, evil, Phil & EWF horns thingy, is actually really great. Amazing covers of "Tomorrow Never Knows" and Genesis' own "Behind the Lines."

"The Roof is Leaking" is a terrific numbah, too. I like that album, and I loved "In the Air Tonight" before it got to be so radio-fatigued. Let's face it, it's an intense and weird song almost more suited to PG than Phil.

There best versions of "In The Air Tonight" and "The Roof Is Leaking" can be found on the SECRET POLICEMAN'S BALL concert video/LP. Less glossy than the studio versions.

I really like the vocal effects, too. And he's really pissed! It's a nice antidote to the treacly love songs he later released. I prefer the Duke version of "Behind The Lines", though - much more powerful.

I have a soft spot in my heart for cheesy male/female duets, so I actually like "Separate Lives." (As well as "Endless Love.") "So you build that wall!" I also like "One More Night" and "Another Day in Paradise" I remember reading an interview with Phil years ago where he said that the lyrics to "In the Air Tonight" were just sort of made up randomly to go with the melody, that they weren't intended to have any inherent meaning or logic (other than what the listener projected onto them), but were just space holders. I've heard similar claims from both Brian Eno and Michael Stipe about many of their lyrics (especially early REM songs - the ones where we all spent hours trying to decipher the words...)

"Against All Odds" is an excellect karaoke song.

One more thing: The Tape Op message boards once posed the question: "What would be the worst possible name for a studio?" and someone suggested "Stu-Stu-Studio."
