Don't forget Sarah Bernhardt

"Basically, she dropped out of society to devote herself to prayer." Sounds good except for the praying part. I'll have to drop out of society (to the extent that I can be said to be in it to begin with) and devote myself to cursing.

First - Michael, that's one of the better one-liners I've heard recently. And: Paula, cow-inking-dentally, guess what was playing at the record store today as I did my annual "my god it's nearly the end of the year and do you realize how many of this year's releases I haven't heard at all yet?" blowout? That's right - the Greenhornes. The track I heard sounded kinda power-poppy - but not in that whiny can't-get-a-date-in-high-school way.

I too was in a record store today and started doing my end of the year what-the-hell-am-I-going-to-put-on-my-best-of-2005 mix shopping spree before it occured to me that my parents will probably come through with their annual Barnes and Noble gift card for hanukah and I should hold off and spree in a few weeks instead of spending money I don't have. Since I was there though, I did treat myself to two EPs from this year which are both good. One is the Calexico/Iron and Wine collaboration (the highlight being a song called "A History of Love") and the other was the Okkervil River "Black Sheep Boy Appendix" CD (I still don't have "Black Sheep Boy" but I figure I can get that during the official spree.)

Wombat, that article on Sarah Bernhardt was especially fascinating since when we think of her today, it's practically always in the context of the one-legged old woman in the surviving silent film snippets or peoples' accounts of seeing her around that age, blithely forgetting that she earned her uniquely phenomenal reputation while a gorgeous young actress with a blazing style that rocked people in their seats. I'll have to swing back by the Jewish Museum to have a look at that show. 2fs, thanks for appreciating that riposte; I rather liked it myself. Now, however, I'd better get back to my cursing.

Okkervil River "Black Sheep Boy Appendix" CD

And speaking of coincidences, I picked this up at work, contemplated taking it home for the weekend, and decided not to. But now I will give it a listen. I second the Calexico/I&W record--that's pretty.
