Have you seen Junebug? It was a wonderful film released mid last year. The editing was similar; often leaving the camera to linger. The effect allowed the audience to feel the tension far better than those hip quick cuts.

I loved Cache and heartily agree with your summary/endorsement. FYI There is an interesting discussion on imdb.com re the last shot and its larger significance.

Yeah but watch out, Cache "Will be challenging for Americans" (who are alike how?). That somehow reminded me of a local critic's critique of an Miami film festival fave of mine from Japan, which was: "Suffers from typical Japanese narrative overkill." (Had more than one storyline??) But I see that that movie, "Comic Magazine", actually shows up on Google now, and I had despaired of ever seeing it again, so thanks, Paula, for reminding me of it. (And you thought you were watching 24....) [Tom R, you might really like that one, from the eighties... if you haven't already somehow seen it.]

I haven't seen 'Comic Magazine', but I will track it down at one of the many Nipponese import video rental stores in the area. I haven't seen 'Cache' either, but the two other Michael Haneke films that I've seen -- 'Funny Games' and 'The Piano Teacher' -- more than warrant me going out and catching it. I am working on some sort of weird 2005-the-year-in-film-review, if anyone cares, and those interested will receive it via e-mail.

As long as we're talking film, I should mention that I caught a sneak of Lars von Triers' latest, 'Manderlay' and thought it was great, every bit as good as his last film, 'Dogville' -- and since this is a sequel, done in the same bare-bones, sets-are-for-directors-who-aren't-genius's style, I can say that if you didn't like the former, you're not going to like the latter. But it's great -- a film designed to infuriate everyone! How could I not like it?
