Promise is one handsome fella. My kids want nothing more than a dog. Promise seems to be trapped in Penn. Otherwise he seems great.

Foxhounds are so great! However, they love to run and run, and the Brooklyn Heights dog run is not big enough, and Promise would likely run into traffic. But if you started working with a trainer ASAP, you could probably get around that, too. And don't let the distance stop you--these shelters and foster homes will often drive the dog right to you.

I love dogs, I feel sorry for dogs in the city. If we get a dog, then its going to be something a bit more relaxed; like a beagle. Promise's blurb says he cant leave Penn. Penn is his Pen so to speak.

Oh, bummer. Beagles, incidentally, are almost as antsy as foxhounds...but they are sized more appropriately for apartment life. Did you have a dog as a kid? I don't remember..you guys probably traveled too much...?

A few dogs, but then again some of my brothers could be consider canine. I had one really really great dog, Barny. But he was a hunting dog, and couldnt handle life in a small town.

Totally agree with you about Melanie and I would urge you to write that email to her to post more songs for download on her site. "Lay Down" is one of the greats. The ONLY reason I became a fan of yours is because "Venus Records" was available for download on 125 Records' site. I gave up on the radio years ago, I don't live anywhere near Brooklyn, how the heck is someone supposed to hear your music? And samples just don't cut it. Sometimes you need to have the whole song with you for a while so its rhythms and "soul" seep into you.

Just a note that there are a bunch of Melanie MP3s available at Emusic.

I never noticed the Melanie/Paula resemblence, but the first time I heard Judee Sill last year, I found her voice quite Carinoesque, decades before that was even an adjective.

Oh, cool--I've heard good things about E-music...I might have to join! Can anyone testify in favor?

2fs - 2006-02-09 12:15:53
Sure. For $10/mo. you get 40 downloads of good-quality mp3s. (There are higher levels too.) They have an increasingly broad selection of indie labels - at least for me, there's more than I have time to listen to. I think non-members can browse around the site to see what's the what, too.

Oh gracious, why do I look at animal rescue sites when I know what they do to me? p.s. I lurves me some eMusic! Even though I don't subscribe myself, I benefit hugely from the person in my household who does.

I'm still waiting to see a white European on one of those subway school ads. There's got to be one somewhere...

Paula - 2006-02-09 12:46:04
They're in the welding school ads.

I knew some pleasant beagles in my youth, but someone around here has one (formerly two) which has/had the unfortunate habit of wandering around constantly "beagling", and it really is a uniquely maddening sound. So make sure any prospective beagle is not a knee-jerk beagler!

Paula - 2006-02-09 14:31:00
Bob, what is "beagling"? Does it sound like this:

Rebecca - 2006-02-09 14:36:22
So, there's this country artist, Robinella, who I like, and she does "Brand New Key," and I think she does it very well...You can go here to listen to her whole album: http://www.cmt.com/music/listening_parties/ I know going to this site may freak some of you out, but they often have very cool stuff.

Paula - 2006-02-09 14:49:32
Oh, yeah, you were telling me about this, and I balked, cuz "BNK" is a sacred childhood artifact. Her voice is a little too high for my general listening comfort, but I like that it has what my grandma would call "personality." Thanks for the link, Rebecca!

so I just had to share this cat and dog story with you and yours, when you read it, you have to read it aloud like you're on dragnet.

Paula - 2006-02-09 15:42:00
This totally makes up for the heroin-in-the-puppies story of last week.

Bob - 2006-02-09 18:18:58
Beagling is a horrific sort of dog-yodelling that I guess maybe all beagles make when they are hot on a trail... but most beagles don't wander around pretending to be hot on a trail all day. I spent many hours of my youth around beagles, outdoors, without ever hearing it, thankfully. Just thought I'd warn Chris that if he were to get what turns out to be a compulsive beagler, his neighbors will foam at the mouth....

Speaking of happy cat-and-dog stories:

Oh, man. If the cats and dogs can call a truce, why can't everybody else?

Regarding the article iwombat posted, I've noticed that the reporter, Michael Brick of NYT, almost always takes a satirical or humorous slant in his pieces. The assistant district attorney in the article, Carol Moran, is my friend and co-worker (and most certainly not a cow-orker, JeFF!). My office does a lot animal cases, which is great - although I suspect this is at least partly because of the great publicity. The media simply cannot resist a story like this, it's in their DNA.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/07/nyregion/07murder.html Sorry, I don't know how to do the link thing. Well, this is a coincidence! I looked for past articles by Michael Brick, and here's the last one he wrote. As it happens, I presented this case to the grand jury last week. Readers will note the name of the judge - yes, he's Marisa's uncle.
