FYI, Elton recorded those covers before he was famous, for money - they appeared on the UK's version of K-Tel records, and he was anonymous. So he didn't choose to record Young, Gifted and Black for artistic reasons, ya know? He also made money recording demos for songwriters - i.e, there are some Nick Drake songs by EJ that he recorded for Drake's publishing company (to get more famous singers to cover the songs).

Gotcha. That makes it all the more interesting.

There are more of those floating around that didn't get put on the compilations (I have a compilation from about 5 years ago, they get reissued every now and then). I have somewhere a cassette bootleg of some session demos featuring Elton and Linda Thompson (before she was Mrs Richard and was a session singer named Linda Peters).

Yeah, I see now that there's a British release which has him doing "United We Stand," a cherished childhood classic. Would love to hear that.

Yeah, Credence could barely pull off Credence a lot of the time... Elton (or whatever his name was then) trying to do so just must be way wrong. Though actually I could see there maybe being no great difference on something like "Proud Mary".

Funny his "Come and Get It" borrows the Badfinger arrangement, since the Badfinger arrangement is a note-for-note copy of the McCartney demo!

Note that "Cottonfields" is not actually a CCR song - they covered it too, in fact - which brings up an interesting point? Not only do i take umbrage with the idea that Credence [sic] could barely pull off Credence, but did ANY band do better covers? Okay, "Ooby Dooby" sucked, but so did the original. The answer, by the way is no, no one did. Not even the Ramones.

I agree, and you will find no bigger CCR fanatic than yours truly. They are in my pantheon.

P.S. The 2 CCR songs on here are "Travelin' Band" and "Up Around the Bend."

I like a lot of Credence songs, and I like a lot of Gun Club songs too, but the Gun Club could barely pull off the Gun Club... which I'm not saying is a bad thing. Certainly better than NOT being able to pull it off, and, MORE admirable than trying to pull it off when you know you can, or, trying to pull it off when everyone knows you got no business trying.
