One might be tempted to think that that story is a fake, since "divers" cannot go to 7,500 feet, but assuming that they really meant submariners does allow me to find that critter plausible, because the clawless lobsters we catch down here get a similar, (and ridiculously synthetic looking up close) hair on the end segment of their legs when they get big. (My mom saves that end segment and touts them to kids as "hairy monster claws".)
