Paula, you should really read the novel of "Truth" (as well as Holmes's more recent novel, "Swing," before someone makes a movie of it, which I assume will happen eventually). Soooo much was cut out of "Truth," and you're right that Lohman does stink. I liked Bacon, though.

I want to! I'm a big fan of the "Pina Colada Song" so I imagine his novel must be good, too.

Thanks! I actually purchased a book-and-CD combo that really rocks. I am giddy. "Eu sou giddy!"

I felt that way about Egoyan's previous film, Ararat. Flawed in many ways and yet I left feeling weirdly satisfied. Something about Egoyan's sensibility/style, in that he can be composed and mature and elegant, even with pretty provocative content. My favorite of his is Calendar.

Am I going to have to defend Alison Lohman now?

Paula - 2006-03-20 22:25:06
eric: go ahead!

anne: thanks, will see if ol' netflix has calendar!

I might be biased, but I've always liked her, and Truth Lies was no exception. Maybe not as good as some of her other roles, but I thought it was a fine job. I thought she was great in Matchstick Men. I actually thought she was fourteen-sixteen, and was shocked to learn that she was in her mid-twenties. Def. underrated. Off topic kind of, I didn't know Where the Truth Lies was a novel first. And Paula, I might've misinterpreted this, but I think Bacon and Firth's act was supposed to be unfunny, and corny, and whatnot. But I might've misread your comment.

Eric:

Corny, certainly, but unfunny? I dunno, they were supposed to be on top of their game at the beginning of the movie, I thought.

As for A.L.--here's where I have to admit having seen White Oleander, and not only really liking that film but being very impressed with her performance. Like I said at the outset, I've liked her in other films, just not in this one.

Re: the comedy team, I've seen clips of Martin & Lewis in their heyday, and it's not exactly a side-splitter these days. I guess different generations have differing ideas of what's funny. If you think, say, Dave Chappelle, Patton Oswalt or Dave Attell are hilarious, as I do, you probably won't get much out of Martin & Lewis.

Dave Chappelle, Patton Oswalt or Dave Attell

I'm sorry to say I've never seen/heard any of these fellows, although DA had a cameo on Arrrested Development. The answer to so many things these days: "Netflix!"

A lot of Egoyan fans seem to think that WHERE THE TRUTH LIES and ARARAT are part of a protracted creative drop-off. The consensus favorites are probably THE SWEET HEREAFTER and EXOTICA. Anne's pick CALENDAR is one of my favorites - it's on the minimalist side, though, less obviously entertaining than most Egoyan. The best for me was NEXT OF KIN, one of the early, funny ones. After that probably EXOTICA.
