You know--I'm sitting here thinking--and I can't disagree with anything you say about Sonic Youth. For some reason though, I've always liked them, despite that they really do represent style over substance--and they rarely manage more than the skeletal frame of a song. I had never really thought about what they lack--and there are songs off of every album I really do like. They really are more of a jam band though if I think about it... and you had to go and make me laugh out loud at the office with the birkenstocks biz... !!!

Substitute "Throwing Muses" for Sonic Youth, and you've got a sentence I've uttered many times. There are just some bands that getcha and you can't explain why their obvious quirks/flaws don't act as deal-breakers.

For example, I can't stop listening to Crash Kelly and that is indefensible.

Wow! Just look that hair! A SuperCuts perm in 2006 is enough to inspire love or hatred. I will admit that I am just superficial enough that the hair would have put them on my trash list in 1988 but in 2006 it draws me in like two-fer happy hours at an old man bar.

I'd be hard pressed to explain what appeals to me about a lot of things that I love--which made writing reviews so difficult for me. Enthusiasm doesn't always translate to words. I could make a list of bands from over the years though... oy!

The Long Winters track's link doesn't work (at least it didn't for me). However, if you go here - http://www.barsuk.com/bands/thelongwinters/media - you can click on the link thereon. Plus, some other tracks too!

How hard and fast is your rule about married couples in bands? Does it apply to Yo La Tengo? Quasi? The Handsome Family? The Fall? Eleventh Dream Day? What if the couple divorces while they're both in the band? That has led to some great music from Richard and Linda Thompson. I'm sure we can all think of others.

Yo La Tengo?

Yes, htey'd be better if Ira and Georgia weren't married.

Quasi?

They're divorced.

The Handsome Family?

They'd also be better if they weren't married.

The Fall

How long were Mark & Brix even married? They don't count b/c they combusted in a really rock-n-roll way.

Eleventh Dream Day?

Not a fan.

Whaddayer mean, the Fall don't count because they combusted? The band, or the marriage? Mark E. Smith has also included Wife E. Smith no.2 and Wife E. Smith no.3 in post-Brix lineups of the band. And I thought of two more bands with married couples in them: Dead Moon, and the Thompson Twins!

I meant the marriage. Anyway ya slice it, I don't like it! Sorry. Married folks should form separate bands, it keeps things more interesting for them and for us, the listeners. And if you were going to say "what about X?", well, I think my rule developed as a result of X.

The E. Smith marriage lasted longer than you might think. Brix first appeared on a Fall album in 1983, and I believe she and Mark divorced in 1989 or 1990. Other married couples in bands: Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Wings, the Mamas and the Papas, Missing Persons, the Plastic Ono Band, Ike and Tina Turner, and the Captain and Tennille! And don't let's start on country music (Johnny and June, George and Tammy, etc...).

Are you just making lists in a listy sort of way, or are you trying to prove that there are good bands w/married couples?
-------------------------------
jon - 2006-07-07 13:30:51
Um, can I do both? You have to admit that if the Captain was in a different band from Tennille, the magic just wouldn't be there.

Paula - 2006-07-07 13:41:03
I think if it were just the Captain, he'd sound like Scott Walker.

We may not agree, but you can't say I've been listless.
