Singing "Dark Globe" to yourself as you're walking down the street is one way to get a wide berth. And to answer the song's final question, we'll ALL miss you Syd!

(But it's a purty song)

That it is - as are many of Syd's songs. I'm grateful we got to hear as many of them as we did - even though it surely would have been nice to have heard more.

I always secretly hoped that he would have some kind of miraculous home-recording comeback. It would have been easy enough...

I heard a rumor several years back that Syd was recording with my favorite recluse Nik Salomon, but that never seemed to go anywhere or turn up. Damn shame... that would have been the greatest comeback in the history of rock and roll revivals.

I just read, online, Malcolm Jones' studio diaries of the recording of the basic tracks for The Madcap Laughs (about two-thirds of them, in one version or another). And at least according to him, Barrett was rather more focused and lucid than you might have guessed, listening to the end results. Perhaps Jones was being discrete, or perhaps Barrett's breakdown wasn't as lasting as generally thought. Maybe he just wanted to get the hell out. So in this (probably wishful and fictitious) story, who knows? Maybe he has reels of home-recorded stuff in the back of a garden shed - which he would only allow to release after he's gone, so he wouldn't have to deal with the bullshit. As I said, wishful thinking...
