He managed to show up in some of my favorite movies (This is Spinal Tap, WE'RE NO ANGELS)
Do you really mean this movie? I've never heard anyone mention it as a favorite before. Granted, I saw it once in 1989 so my recollection of it may be faulty, but I remember being disappointed by it. Great cast, great screenwriter, good director, but it just managed to be ok. Interesting choice though.

I have seen this film several times, and it always moves me. (It's been awhile, though.) The "sermon" that Sean Penn gives is particularly touching, as is his relationship with the Reilly character, and his decision at the end of the movie (no spoiler, I).

Capt. Fantastic, also a favorite--summer of '75, AM Radio on the beach in Lavalette, NJ. JAWS and Poseidon Adventure were the movies of the summer but nobody stayed out of the water. Spent my 4 bucks on Captain Fantastic on 8-track tape and played it until it broke. Few songs ever smashed me harder than the segue from Scarecrow into We All Fall In Love Sometimes. 30+ years down and they still inspire wave upon wave of chills and goosebumps.

I should explore Capt. Fantastic but the album cover scared me as a kid. I LOVED "Someone saved my life tonight" if that's on there. It reminded me of my favorite movie, THE OMEGA MAN, for some reason. (It aint my favorite movie anymore, this was the 1970s!) May I add that I can't stand Robert Christagau anymore and that he is as relevant as Andy Rooney? Thank you

I have never been fond of RC...in fact most music critics bug me in one way or another.

I like Simon Reynolds and many of the old writers for CREEM, though. And Ira Robbins, naturally.

It reminded me of my favorite movie, THE OMEGA MAN...

Now THAT'S a great movie to have as a favorite. I hear they are doing yet another adaptation of "I Am Legend" the novel on which OM is based, this time featuring Will Smith.

Vincent Price did a fantastic earlier version of Omega Man, I believe titled The Last Man on Earth.

I second the opinion that the Captain Fantastic album cover was scary. It had perverse little Bosch-influenced details that are probably entirely lost on a CD sized cover.
