Question: When exactly did Elvis acquire that nickname? Did it start out as a positive thing? His dietary issues being what they were, maybe he just spent a lot of time on the throne. No really... when did they start calling him "The King." Also, who is more fitting of the title? I could think of a few.

Well, Lester Young the most excellent tenor saxamaphonist, who played with Basie, and on his own, was AKA Pres, or "the president". Of course Basie was "the Count"(which I think was more about his ability to count off a good tempo, than royalty) and there was the Duke, you know who I mean.

Nostalgia beards? I don't know about you lot, but I could never kiss a man with a beard.

I, myself, will not scoff, being one who misses many things, in fact, I think I heard part of that song once. I am trying to see missing things as a not entirely negative situation, but rather an art.

Elvis is "The King" for the same reason that fantasy novels, etc., are usually set in worlds with royalty, etc.: there's something more romantic about that kind of world than the bureaucratic world evoked by "President." And presenting...the Secretary Pro Tem of the Blues..... I think the Amish beard thing comes from the freak-folk thing. I have a well-trimmed beard - very different from these huge hairy bear-like things those guys are sporting. They are, however, useful for shoplifting small items.

True, but I'm just being literal here--his name is Pres-ley. "Pres."

I would love to have seen The King sing Mmmbop! I don't think the song is so bad at all... the pain is now I'm going to have it stuck in my head all day, and I can't really sing along because there are some high notes that would give me a hernia.
