Well done, Scholastic! Always best to be removed from crass, commercial exploitation, especially when it's fraught with lies... blaming Bill Clinton for 9/11 is like blaming Osama bin Laden for bad weather.

To my mind, W is a war criminal and a despicable excuse for a human being, but it seems to me that the inaccuracies and distortions that the former Clinton Admin. staff are complaining about in regards to this movie are fairly minor. So Sandy Berger DIDN'T pound the desk with the phone. So what? Let's face it: Clinton WAS reticent to use illegal means to kill suspected terrorists. Does that make him responsible for 9/11?

If you think the uproar over this flick is big, wait until this comes out.

Tom G: All I can say is Oh nooooooooooo. They're turning our lives (and deaths I suppose) into a John Grisham film adaptation! I will say that I'm interested to see what Tom Hanks will make of Charlie Wilson's War. And I'd like to see a bio-film of the life of Ahmad Shah Massoud.

FWIW, it isn't just "former Clinton admin. staff" complaining about the movie: I received no less than 8 e-mails from various lefty organizations today imploring me to do my bit to get ABC to do right. It's the implications (not that Sandy Berger did/n't pound the desk) and the use of 9/11 as run-in to election season that irks my gotten goat. At this point, though, I hope we're beyond getting fooled again.

2fs: You're right. The reports I had read about the miniseries were, shall we say, somewhat less than complete. As more information regarding the film and the complaints about it are reported it does seem as though it's a smear job. And it's just lovely that ABC plans to interrupt the broadcast of it on Monday for Bush's address just to add an extra dose of "reality".

Tom G. and 2fs: I've no doubt in my mind given the content and timing and the people that made this docu-drama (an oxymoron if ever there was one)that this is purely propaganda--and I will come out and say it--Leni Riefenstahl couldn't have done much better. It's just more divisive lies and rubbish. The U.S. media remains a monumental disappointment and grows worse--when Haaretz in Israel provides more balanced reporting of the situation in Lebanon and Gaza than the NY Times... ugh. And the best the west has to offer is Michael Moore's "info-tainment," which I believe has undermined the truth--when the truth (however elusive) is all we have... sad, sad, sad.

Two news source recommendations: Haaretz (mentioned above) and The Daily Star out of Beirut. Both available online and great papers--very balanced, real journalism. Today, by the way, is the 5th anniversary of the murder of Ahmad Shah Massoud, an intense and enigmatic character (The Lion of Panjshir)--had he been given more support years ago, the world could be very different today.
