My epitaph will be either: "What are you doing here? Don't you have anything better to do?" -or- "Ha! Ha! Still alive!"

When did you last die?
I am multitudes, little bits of me are dying always.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
anxiety, bad chemicals, hope.
What became of your childhood dreams?
they grew up, got old, and now prod my my sad little psyche to whatever effort I manage to make towards joy.
What is missing from your life?
probably stuff that I don't even know is possible.
Do you think that everyone can be an artist?
everyone is born an artist, it's more a question of if or when we stop, or if we can start again.
Where do you come from?
beats me.
Do you find your lot an enviable one?
I am lucky in some ways, but envy would be someone else's mistake.
What have you given up?
desserts, snacks, drugs mostly, certainty.
What do you do with your money?
bury it in shallow holes, in little trunks, and then make maps with x's.
What would you like to receive for your birthday?
brain cells.
Cite three living artists whom you detest.
I wouldn't know their names.
What do you stick up for?
folly. real stuff.
What are you capable of refusing?
almost everything.
What is the most fragile part of your body?
I don't know, brain?
What has love made you capable of doing?
I don't know, that's one of those big words, maybe it's the thing that makes me capable of lying on the floor face down and moaning, or maybe it's the thing that make me able to breathe.
What do other people reproach you for?
not being able to answer a simple question,
Being unable to talk like a human being on the telephone.
What does art do for you?
What is art? maybe it's the stuff that defines consciousness, and reality.
Write your epitaph.
what has begun ends, what has no beginning does not, goodbye.

Wombat--giving up certainty--I like that. I was reading a rare little autobiography of an outdoorsman named Johnny Thorpe. Wrapping up a trapping anecdote that became a metaphor for his life he said, "I realized that whenever I've been most certain of something, it turns out I've been wrong." That one little anecdote significantly changed my life.

When did you last die? The moment I was born, I started to die. What gets you out of bed in the morning? A prayer. What became of your childhood dreams? I'm in the process of making them come true. What is missing from your life? Children. My own family. A dog. Do you think that everyone can be an artist? No, not everyone. I'm not sure I am one myself. Where do you come from? Pakistan and America - I'm bicultural. Do you find your lot an enviable one? Yes. What have you given up? Cursing and porn - but only for Ramadan. What do you do with your money? Put it in the bank, lend it to people, give it away. Buy books. And coffee. What would you like to receive for your birthday? Blessings. Cite three living artists whom you detest. I can't answer this one. I don't detest people for creating. What do you stick up for? Muslims everywhere. What are you capable of refusing? Anything chemical. What is the most fragile part of your body? My lungs. What has love made you capable of doing? Conquering my fears. What do other people reproach you for? Talking too loudly - like an American. What does art do for you? Makes me jealous. Write your epitaph. Turn me over in five minutes. When the thermometer pops out of my ass, I'm done.
