Hold Steady--having heard it all the way through twice--my sentiments exactly. Mid 70s Springsteen--moreso than the Constantines whom people compared to Bruce. It's a ripping hot rock and roll album, but on first listen it's all I heard. Second listen I got by it and heard the songs though, and they're really good. For non-Brucers though it's the Hold Off.

Yeah, all the hype over their last album (the cover of the Voice? What kind of payola was that about!) sort of got me for awhile, but the guy's one-trick over Ashbury Park Catholic smack shootin' schtick got old fast, though "Little Hoodrat Friend" is still a popular mix CD staple. If I want that vibe now I just re-read the amazing New Venus Drive by Sam Lipsyte.

The only dictionary I've ever found myself simply reading is A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, by Captain Francis Grose, which is chock full of terms of gypsy and cant and soldier origin, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublimely asinine. Some are even totally current, centuries later. Old Encyclopedia Britannica's are fun if you happen to be looking for something, though. My last name's Slovakian, and Czechoslovakia, our 1948 Britannica noted, is: "A nation of itinerant broom-binders". And last century's McClane's Fishing Encyclopedia even contains a rare gem, in the following line: "Prime's incessant Godhopping could perhaps be indulged, since anglers are noted for patience, if only the fishing parts were more pertinent than they now seem."

A nation of itinerant broom-binders

When I was a kid we had a World Book Encyclopedia from, I guess, the 50s or early 60s, and their entry on black culture in the United States prominently displayed a photo of a train porter, with a caption that read something like, "Colored men and women have found many career opportunities in the service field."

Sassy pink? I beg your pardon...

Greg, I disagree with you (first time ever) about the "Hold Off". I care not a whit for Springsteen, but I love the Hold Steady. Isn't the new Killers album supposed to be heavily Springsteen influenced too? And Paula, when you run out of downloads at eMusic you can buy boooooster packs.

And Paula, when you run out of downloads at eMusic you can buy boooooster packs.

I actually had bought a booster pack already and went through that, and I can't be a-spendin' all my hard-earned cash on the devil's music, sinner.

Jon:

I care not a whit for Springsteen

This suprises me. And also, er, do you care a Spring for Wittgenstein?

Jon--you WHAT??? Duh duh dis a gu... No, actually, that sounded like a much more harsh criticism than intended. It is really so Loosey Brucey that it surprised me. It's all the things I like about Bruce though, which is a good thing. Paula--I Kant believe you asked that question!!

Whoa, looks like I don't have a Locke on bad puns around here, Liebniz.

You should have stationed a Kierkegaard at the door.

You two have carved out a Nietszche for yourselves.

So Paula, you ran through 40 downloads plus a booster pack by October 3? Wasn't GLUTTONY one of those seven deadly sins? (I myself have 8 left in my booster pack, but I would have spent them all if I hadn't mail-ordered the Pernice Brothers cd.)

I am too slothful, angry, and lusty to buy things in a store...But I learned my lesson...I rarely download whole albums anymore.
