A couple thoughts--Many New Deal critics alive today are the same people that support The Patriot Act. That pretty much says it all. Centralize power in the executive branch to feed people and keep them working, or do it make poor excuses for an illegal war and rape the constitution to line the pockets of your cronies. And think of it this way: Hitler was very fond of his dogs, but that doesn't make owning pets "fascist." Laurel Canyon? Scary! I will cop to being an avid Zappa fan, but he was pretty critical of all that hoo ha in the hills also. I like CSNY as much as the next ex-pothead (well, probably not nearly as much, honestly), but I can't think of a lot from that era/locale, that moves me all that much.

Laurel Canyon era regrettable? The Byrds! Mamas and the Papas! Joni! Jimmy Webb! FDR! History books! Love 'em all.

Roosevelt and Kennedy are posthumously the most widely criticized Presidents here in the States. It seems odd that Nixon was nearly canonized, and there were far too many kind words for Reagan after his lengthy demise.

Love 'em all.

I wouldn't be reading or writing about 'em if I didn't secretly love 'em all, but I reserve the right to find David Crosby, his big fur hat, and Stephen Stills' solo career objectionable.

Laurel Canyon, despite producing a lot of music that I truly love, was always synonomous with "Vulgar Excess" to me. David Crosby is synomous with Laurel Canyon. A friend of mine, writing a Crosby retrospective, broke his career into 2 parts. Pre-Fat & Stupid, and Just Fat & Stupid. It was never printed because the editor screened the reviews with the P.R. guy at the label first... which is utterly lame.

I should have typed like instead of love in that last post. I was looking at my dumplings--and I mean my lunch...
