"Bjrk out". You've really got to slow down on his whole "euphemism" trend, I think...

Isn't that an example of "Erich Kuerstening"? Shampoo IS a strange name, it sounds like a name for a whale god, or slumbering volcano.

is "Bjrk out" about excessive tweakiness? I wasn't really a fan of her's, more because of the production style, and mostly, to me, in the cursory listening I gave her, not very compelling songs, but there's one thing of her's where she sang with a jazz big band, and I think it totally kicks ass, and I don't usually go for that , espeically not when rockers try it...

"one thing of her's where she sang with a jazz big band" -- That album is "Gling-Gl". It may be out of print.

Firstly... I'm really envious of you guys that can do the accents, and tildes and umlauts because I can never remember the proper keystrokes. It's rare though that I have to type Bjork correctly because her vocals give me the heebie jeebies.

I think Wombat means that one song from POST, "Like Falling in Love" or whatever.

hey, thanks guys, I just came from the itunes store, and are my fingers tired! but seriously, I just listened to a little of "Gling-Gl" and although some of that seemed pretty cool to me, that's just a trio. I think Erich may be right, "Like Falling in Love" kinda rings a bell (but they didn't have that song)...

There was one single I remember "So Quiet," which I'm pretty sure was a cover--started out in a whisper and then a big band came crashing in. I have no idea what it was on though.

"It's Oh So Quiet" is a cover (from the album, Post) of an old standard called "Blow A Fuse", written by Hans Lang and Bert Reisfeld, who I think wrote quite a few old standards (the rest of the IHoP blogmunity are the musical experts, not me...). I believe she rewrote the lyrics some, which is why (I guess) it's retitled. Spike Jonz (Being John Malkovich) directed the music video, which is quite delightful. In fact, Jonz and Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine) have collectively directed about 2/3 of her videos. Say what you will about Ms. Gumundsdttir, she seems to work with some mighty talented folk...

and yes it turns out that "It's Oh So Quiet" is what I was thinking of, just talked to the friend who played it for me, and yeah, she was telling about the video too, which I haven't seen... thanks y'all.

I have a Bjork album and my favorite song on there is "Venus as a Boy" which was also featured on the soundtrack of The Professional/Leon. I'm fond of "Human Emotions" too - that bass line is wicked.

FWIW, The Sugarcubes' Life's too good remains a standout, a great record. I'll continue to have faith in Bjrk's efforts based on that record alone. I still wish I could write anything as good as "Birthday" or "Motorcrash".

Weighing in here on Bjork: I adore her, and agree that "Birthday" is one of the most haunting songs in all of rockdom.

It annoys me when other people sound like her, because she is so unique and their imitation seems pointless.

Same goes for Kristin Hersh.

And aside from Bjork and Kristin, eccentric vocal mannerisms tend to annoy me. Joanna Newsome, I'm looking at you.

Re Joanna Newsom: I know what you mean, but...I think she just sings that way. And on the new one, I think she's got a better handle on how to do that - less squeaky and eccentric-seven-year-old-girl-throwing-a-tantrum-because-her-little-brother-refuses-to-wear-the-cardboard-elf-ears-she's-made, and more controlled and tonally richer. But, uh, some singers are acquired tastes - which is to say some folks will never acquire tastes for particular singers. (Scott Miller fans, you know what I mean.)
