I saw a review/video at NY times online, they saw it, it seems, the very same way. I never read the book (not ever having been a young girl) (I remember when all the girls read it) but I know the story, I think there was an animated version that I saw... looks lovely.

Charlotte's Web is a great story! Wombat--I was never a young girl either, despite what Paula might say, but the book is worth the read. The animated version has Paul Lynde as Templeton the Rat and is a lot of fun. Knucklehead #2 (my younger son) played Templeton in a 2nd grade production that the children adapted themselves. It's a riot and I've got it on video!

A teacher of mine read it to us at lunch every day. I still how terrible I felt when...oops, don't want to give the ending away.

BP--I've had long conversations with other parents about not just this ending, but similar stories/endings. There is a lot of mixed sentiment on just what we should and shouldn't protect our children from. It's a little different for those, like myself, who grew up in rural settings and there is more exposure to natural life cycles. It was a no-brainer for me in dealing with these issues with my children. On a somewhat related note, have you ever read "Everything I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten?" The gist of it is HERE

Um.. that would be "All I... etc."

Greg, on a related note, when Picasso saw these he said "We have learned nothing in twelve thousand years."

Wombat: Egad! Even though I'm a strict adherent to the DEVO school of human development, or de-evolution as it were, I'm still impressed when I see stuff like that. If those artists were alive today they'd be courted by the likes of Charles Saatchi and probably have theme restaurants in London.

That's just the kind of thing an idiot like Picasso would say.

Pablo Picasso was such an asshole. Paula, the recent live action film of Peter Pan was also quite beautiful to watch.
