I always turn to wiser men and women in times like this. In this case, Robert Fisk: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/fisk/article2144057.ece

I think this administrations Iraq policy will go down as the all time worst foreign policy blunders in US history. Having said that, I don think sending more troops is as crazy as it sounds. At least its a change of tactics, an realization that the prior policy was not working. I wish they had changed strategy, not just tactics, and gone with a political solution that includes dealing with Iran and Syria and a realistic way. But we cannot just walk away, or we could not continue doing what we were doing... My views on st elsewhere another time.

We used to have more troops there. Now they're dead. Sending more troops just means giving them more targets. We will have to re-learn what we learned in Vietnam, and what the Russians learned in Afghanistan and are still learning in the Central Asian republics. We will learn what Israel is learning in Palestine and Lebanon. The war will go on forever.

I just dont know what the solution is. If you just pull out your accepting the consequences of a bigger civil war, with untold Iraq deaths. The left is correctly talking about how we failed to stop genocide in Rwanda and now perhaps darfur. Not sure that position is consistent with turning iraq into one. The huge huge mistake was invading in the first place. Paula. St Elsewhere? geez

Hey Chris, I apologize for coming off so combative. It didn't occur to me until after I sent it that I fired off something from the hip without considering it was you and what you believe, etc. I think genocide can be avoided--too late to prevent civil war--everybody knew that would happen with Saddam out anyway. I don't think dividing Iraq will work either despite that the existing border is fairly arbitrary and conceived by racist British conservatives anyway. We haven't even sent more troops yet and our "allies" have decided to withdraw more of theirs. That's largely symbolic but they are leaving the war in our hands, along with the blood--and why shouldn't they? They weren't consulted. We need to pull out and let the U.N. take emergency action and stop pulling the weight of our power of veto on everything that doesn't suit our oil interests. We need to work with the U.N. on demanding an arms embargo and prosecute any citizen selling arms or brokering weapons deals through other countries--that would include Dick Cheney's pals at Brown & Root. We need to commit to ending duplicitous foreign policy now. Approval ratings mean jack shit when dissenters do NOTHING to prove they mean it.
