OK--thanks! (He's not on iTunes, though...)

Go get some Simon Joyner off his new album Skeleton Blues.

Philip - 2007-01-17 14:59:59
Tree By Leaf, especially the album "Of the Black and Blue."

2008 looks like it could be heating up with Obama vs. Clinton... that's a no-brainer for me on the Obama side. Sneaking suspicion is that the DNC will back Clinton and the fight could get filthy.

Simon Joyner I got, and like, thanks!

Tree by Leaf is a nice new find--thanks Philip. Who could resist a band with someone named Siiri Soucy? And speaking of names, you spell your name the way my nephew does, with a single L: uncluttered, good feng shui.

the DNC will back Clinton

Hmmm. I get the opposite impression.

have you dug the Heartless Bastards?

I don't get the same pleasure watching the Democrats self destruct as I do the GOP, perhaps it's because they're a smidge closer to what I believe... not much more than a smidge, but closer. There are huge opportunities afoot for progressive thinkers but not if they tear at each other like dogs--but all cooperation has meant in recent decades is the move towards the fairly right of center, namby pamby centrism that now defines the Democrats.

I've droned on and on about them, in fact! Did you see either of their NYC shows in November? I had to miss 'em both, sadly.

Now available on EMusic, had I ever actually compiled my best of 2005 list, this would have been near the top. http://www.emusic.com/album/10918/10918105.html

The Shake Some Action! album was just added to emusic. The first track, "Sound of Your Mind", slays me like nothing else released so far in 2007.

Whoa... Steve posts in stereo... Steve In Stereo is a good band name.

Alan: nice--is this guy a one-man band?

Steve: I have download the slay-track--despite my distaste for bands who name themselves after songs--and indeed it's pretty rockin'.

And I just remembered how you and Sue were goin' on about Sloan, so I'm whisking away some tracks from that new album, too. Then my Emusic downloads will be gone til 2/4. I really think I need to suspend my Emusic account for awhile. It's just more music than I can possibly listen to.

They're a four piece, actually. Great live, though you're not likely to catch them much outside of this area unless your timing is great. Since they all have regular type jobs they don't tour that much.

Thank you for the Heartless Bastards, which I definitely discovered through this blog's year-end list. Ditto (don't you hate people who say, "Ditto"?) that last Tom Verlaine solo album which of course had passed right under my radar.Perfect walking-around-the-city music. So I'm glad you liked Tree By Leaf. We stumbled across them completely by accident in a club in New Hampshire and were blown away, mostly by Siiri's voice, but also the songs. Then after we talked to them and we couldn't quite tell but we were pretty sure that they were (disconcertingly, to say the least) born-again Christians! By the way, if there's anything else about your nephew worth emulating, please let me know. I need all the positive role-models I can get!

Philip: I am a big fan of religious people who make non-religious music, as it is often quite inspired and weird and beautiful (see: pretty much all the Sounds Familyre bands)

Yeah, Tom V's two (two! at the same time!) solo albums this year were definitely interesting if not "great."

The Other Philip is kinda gurgly and cute, only has a few teeth, eats with his hands, is not yet toilet trained, and sometimes takes his brother's Boobah action figure w/o asking. I think you could probably pull all that off without too may lifestyle changes.
