A welcome double-whammy reminder in two areas where I am both chronically lacking and in especially current need: New York appreciation and spiritual rebooting. No "this is a cliche" disclaimers necessary. Artfully observed and eloquently written. (Who can resist platform-boot adornment in the details?) Powerful and pretty thoughts. Thank you, I needed that.

The You Am I album came out last summer in Australia, but was just released last week by Yep Roc in the USA. That label is aiming to corner the market on 40+ alt-rockers.

After my all day yoga thingie, I stopped for a wine tasting at my favorite wine shop. That's the closest I can come to your sublime range.

Must take issue; and really, I insist this is not just a matter of semantics... contentment has very little to do with what or who is out there. Happiness, on the other hand...

How would you define happiness (as distinct from contentment)?

Happiness denotes pleasure or even glee! It can be (and frequently is) as fleeting as a cool breeze. Contentment might include that, but primarily is a matter of satisfaction; with the world, with your place in it, with yourself. I think one could be content without ever truly being happy, but I'm not sure you could be truly happy without being content.

While you insist this is not a matter of semantics, I think it basically is. Contentment, happiness--I see them as the same thing, and neither of them are (or need to be) fleeting.

I think we shall have to agree to disagree on this matter, and leave it at that.

Paula, next time you play the You Am I album, start with the last track, "I'm a Mess". It snuck up on me and became my favorite. Heads up: You Am I will be playing a rare US date on 3/25 at the Bowery Ballroom. Wish I could see them...
