I've never seen it articulated like that before, but I think what you wrote dead-on true. Another entry for the endless encyclopedia of wholism. (Though I must admit, I always just assumed it was who was Keith Richards pulling the strings...)

It's getting harder to tell Keith and William apart these days, so you may be right.

But let's not rule out Metallica.

I've just seen the first installment of "Extras", but let me say that I unequivocally love anything in which Kate Winslet talks as filthily as she did in that episode. In addition I am vaguely frightened that you know anyhing of the PuppetMaster movies -- that's the kind of crap I'm supposed to keep track of...

The Kate Winslet episode was definitely the highlight of Season 1. While I like Extras in general all right, some of the intended humor makes me feel sorry for the intended victims instead. It almost always provokes a strong reaction from me though, whether it's a laugh, sympathy or a cringe.

What I like about Extras is that, across the narrow arc of only 6 episodes, Ricky Gervais is trying to inject some character development, in addition to just the cringey stuff. The Andy character is definitely moving beyond David-Brant-as-actor.

I haven't seen many recent horror movies, but right up til the early 90s, I was still a fan of that stuff. But I haven't seen the 25 sequels.

The cool thing about having Metallica as the puppet master is that Lars would make sure that if somebody stole your girlfriend, they'd have to pay out the nose.

I need some clarification - are you saying that the conversations had between you and your various others about you and your significant other are really conversations ABOUT your relationship with those various others, OR are you saying the mere act of conversing (regardless of topic) is more about that various relationship than the advice or opinion given for that significant relationship? (whoa, I just made my head spin)

grigorss - 2007-02-09 16:15:56
"I haven't seen many recent horror movies" -- It's just as well that you haven't (schlocky or otherwise), as along with stained glass, it's a lost art here in the states; maybe a half dozen exceptions come to mind (three that immediately float to the top being Session 9, Blair Witch Project, and Habit; none of them made within the last five years though). Asia, specifically, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea seem to have the market on that form of entertainment at the moment; To appreciate them, though, it helps if you like your horror films a little art-sy -- or your art films a little horrific...

There's an icky in William Hickey. I'm not fond of what the American Horror genre has become. It's not scary at all, just gross.

EG: both, really. On the surface, we may be talking about our Significant Others, but a) the tenor of the conversation (are we joking? is it dead serious? is it helpful? annoying? is the person taking sides? etc.) reflects the nature of the r'ship I have with the friend, and b) in and of itself is a substantive part of our friendship.

I may be bummed out about something happening in my love life, but talking about it with Friend #1 may be sort of fun and convivial. At that moment, I'm being nourished emotionally by the friend, and not the SO, and hopefully vice versa.

Luckily, most of my friends and family are the type to analyze r'ship stuff (and music and films and politics) for the sheer ducks of it, aside from the utilitarian purpose of problem-solving.

EG - 2007-02-09 17:25:46
Then you are referring to the subtext of these conversations versus what is actually being said. Because I agree that the tone and level of seriousness of whatever is discussed is very illustrative of your relationship to the one you are having the discussion with, rather than who the discussion is about. But what I thought you might have initially said, is that while a conversation is about someone else, it really is about the two people talking, which I don't necessarily agree with. If we had a conversation about another, I don't think any specific advice or reaction I would get from you would help me in my relationship with you, while it may be extremely helpful with my relationship with the person we were speaking about. I also don't ascribe to the puppetmaster example. I think we are all connected-weblike somehow and that any movement you makes can't help but disturb those around you. It's like when a butterfly flaps his wings, a car alarm goes off. I need a drink.

That's one enormous, mutated butterfly.

Oh - and those Translator albums are wonderful (I mean in their original incarnations). You say "is reissuing": it's hard to tell from the Wounded Bird site (which is kind of minimalist in info), but when are they coming out?
-------------------------------
Paula - 2007-02-10 08:39:35
My intel says Feb 27 for the Translator CDs. Woo.

Well, EG, when I say PuppetMaster, I really mean we are all one...One Love, all connected. Even the thoughts I think effect other people. So I think we are in agreement.

manyjars - 2007-02-13 12:25:53
Ooh, that is good news about Translator. I want somebody to do the same for the Method Actors!

manyjars - 2007-02-13 12:30:14
Wow, the Wounded Bird site says they are going to do the Polyrock albums too! Some of the artists on their roster made me giggle (EBN-OZN, anyone?) Then again, I still have my 12" single of "A E I O U" (with the remix on the flipside!)

Paula - 2007-02-13 16:27:57
Method Actors--were they the Rang-a-Tang guys? I know, I could google, but I like the conversation.
-------------------------------
manyjars - 2007-02-14 13:23:17
Rang-a-Tang is correc-a-tect!

I too like to see Kate Winslet behaving badly (e.g., Holy Smoke and Beautiful Creatures). I liked William Hickey best when he was Pete & Pete's grandpa, and when he did the scientist's voice in Nightmare Before Christmas.
