For reasons too mundane to go into, I was somewhat privy to the post-production process on "Grizzly Man", and can confirm (because I saw a certain amount of the raw footage and early cuts) that most of Mr. Treadwell's confederates are the same sort of not-quite-successful, narcissistic, perpetually out-of-work actor types he was; not surprisingly, they share many of his faults, including a need to be as "entertaining" as possible when in front of the camera. And yes, the coroner was bucking to be the host of his own reality show; trust me, there's about 25 minutes of him on the cutting room floor to prove this -- what can I say? The Power of the Camera... I think what makes this a truly excellent doc. is how Herzog maneuvers the viewer around into recognizing how we all participate into the same kind of narcissistic view of Nature that Treadwell had; not to as great an extent (one would hope), but to a degree anyway -- the scene between Werner and the fox is particularly illustrative of this. A blog topic of a few days back was 'DVD extras', and the short doc. found in the Special Features menu, "On The Edge: The Grizzly Man Sessions" is actually worth taking a look at and a listen to; it's an insightful look into the creative process (especially as applied to film scoring), and you get to hear Richard Thompson and band play some tracks that you don't actually hear in the film. By the by, Werner's voice is indeed "surprisingly reasonable"; and if you don't believe me, trust Joaquin Phoenix.

That Joaquin Phoenix story is great. If I ever overturn my car, I hope Werner Herzog is there to rescue me.

Oh, and I did watch most of the Richard Thompson thing--nice.

Knut is indeed cute, but why does he appear to be in some kind of S&M dungeon setting?

why does he appear to be in some kind of S&M dungeon setting? ...because that's just how he rolls...

That's pretty cute--I like the picture with the bottles, it looks decadent and vaguely opium-den-like.
