I don't think I've actually consumed anything (other than a cup of coffee) from Mickey D's in over five years -- and if you saw this, you wouldn't want to, either. Tsk, tsk, McDonald's... who would've thought you so deeply flawed?

Greg - 2007-02-13 12:12:20
I've not a clue where that could come from? Hairy bloke?

Not actually knowing you except via this blog and a handful of songs on my ipod, it would be impossible for me to say what it is and isn't in character for you -- but still, I'd love to hear any explanation you may offer for this fast food fetish. (Even better, of course, would be the long-promised Mickie Ds conspiracy theory!) I also would like to know what it means to have ElliotSmithness on one's vocals.

Wait--my McD's thing was never a conspiracy theory, just a complicated opinion. But as for the fetish part--this is easily traceable to childhood.

I just wrote this really long reply, and realized how deep this goes. I think I'd better save this for therapy, if I can ever find a good shrink again. It has to do with food, mothers who resent cooking, and the sweet oblivion of eating out.

Oh, and: "ElliottSmithishness" is when a male folk singer with rock tendencies sings in the high part of his range (but not falsetto), often with a unison or close harmony, particularly when backed by big strummy acoustic guitars.

"Chery Coke" = not rhyming slang. Think TV commercial from the 80s...

that first one, burgerk, reminds me, in form, of Brute Force's song about the king of Fuh.

Okay, so I attempted a cheat on the Cherry Coke reference. Still empty-handed but found this and it's kind of cool.

Is this Philip Price formerly of the Maggies? The only cherry coke commercial is the one that sounded like David Bowie's "Changes" (New Ch-Ch-Ch-Cherry Coke!)

Paula - 2007-02-13 17:55:35
Steve: Yup, same Phillip Price. And that is definitely not the cherry coke ad I am thinking of...

Greg: What a weird site...it's like a Studs Terkel interview, except for really useless knowledge.

I don't get this one:

Advil: This had a man who had a headache and the woman takes him to the Doctor and the doctor prescribes to take Advil, and says it works better. The man goes "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" with a voice of a drink.

Side note: does everyone else find that in the last month or so, Diaryland no longer remembers who you are? I'm using Firefox, fwiw... Anyway: I like the "Cherry Coke" thing - even though I don't get it either. I'll have to say that I have eaten at McD's several times in the last few years - but I plead innocence on a technicality: it was always with Rose's folks, and it's their favorite restaurant. (No, really: they're small-town folks, and they're just comfortable there.) Otherwise, I could say I haven't eaten at McD's, BK, or Wendy's in probably two years...and probably only two-three times in five years. Just not my scene, ma-aa-aan.

I do my burgerking at Taco Bell. Alone.

But I try to avoid indulging in too much shame about it. I eat healthily enough most of the time that the very occasional fast food nosh is not going to kill me. I think eating should be a joyful experience, not a measure of one's inner worth. I love vegetables and tofu and crisp apples and McD's fries and hot fudge ice cream cake from Shoney's. Moderation in all things, of course.

OK, apparently I am alone in this potent memory: Cameo's song "Word Up" was featured in one of the first Cherry Coke commercials. The guy from Cameo sang it, wearing his space costume: "Word up is Cherry Coke."

Philip Price sounds exactly the same in Maggies recordings from 1994, back when Elliott Smith was probably too obscure to influence anyone.

Steve - if you haven't been following Philip since the Maggies went away, he's done some amazing solo work - especially the awesome 2003 CD HONEY IN THE CHEMICALS. The first Winterpills album is nothing to sneeze at either.
