Whitaker's speech was the highlight of the evening; he didn't seem to have an agenda (as some many who give an Oscar speech do), he was just genuinely thankful and said his peace and left the stage. I think the same could be said for Alan Arkin's speech earlier that evening as well.

I admired the way ennio made no attempt to speak english... not even a crowd-pleasing catch phrase. It was sad when the announcer referred to INFERNAL AFFAIRS as a Japanese film, as in this rainbow colored Oscars it's still okay to assume no one knows the difference between Japan and Hong Kong.

I didn't catch the misreference to Infernal Affairs, but it doesn't surprise that the mistake was made. It is somewhat surprising to me that the in no way superior to the original, The Departed, finally garners Scorsese his first Oscar; but I suppose the Academy just felt that he had been passed over too many times. That probably explains Ennio Morricones' and Alan Arkins' long overdue recognition, as well.

This was definitely the year for "you had this coming" Oscars. I adore Alan Arkin, but his performance in LMS wasn't career-defining or nothin'.

I read his speech, and I thought it was nice.

Other notes: every time I see Helen Mirren lately, for one irrational split second I think it's my Auntie Barbara, although my aunt is prettier.

There was an interview with Forrest in The Guardian a while back--evidently he's really into that yogurt stuff that everybody talks about--getting in touch with his inner light and connectedness and all that.

The original In-Laws with Alan Arkan and Peter Falk is one of the funniest movies ever made. They both should have gotten awards for that.
