Interesting observation on bringing too much music in too quickly, and a good analogy with the party. My "relationship" with a lot of artists and albums and songs has suffered from lack of attention directly related to "too much." It's easy to get drunk on the volume and variety, but like a good session with da bottle, the memory gets hazy. I've been trying to make up for this neglect lately by reconnecting with dozens of more recent adoptees and older gems also. Re: Grant Lee Phillips--I never heard a song of his I didn't like, but never bought. Any specific album suggestions?

Musical suggestion-to go back to recent globbentry, try Reigning Sounds' cover of "I'd Rather Be With The Boys," or any tracks off Time Bomb High School, perhaps Reptile Style.

Re: G-L Phillips: Hmm...aside from that covers album he did a little while back, this is the first I've really paid attention to him at length.

Wait...You mean there's other music than Exile On Main St.????

Try some songs from Anis's album "La Chance". My favorites: Oisif, Bistro, J'voulais etre un MC. Oh hell, the whole album is great.

Wow--delving back into Glob-History, I see I had promised then to check out Grant Lee Phillips--I guess that didn't make it too far. Perhaps this weekend, along with Mary Weiss and the new Ted Leo.

I was just listening to some Arto Lindsay that I hadn't heard before, the record "Prize". I like it, Brazilian roots filtered through a modern sensibility, maybe you'd like it, since you're secretly Brazilian.

Tanya Donelly's last two albums are both some of my favorites of their respective years. Listening to "This Hungry Life" for the umpteenth time as I write this.

If you're not familiar with the Dents from Boston you might want to try "One More Time" from "Time for Biting".

Oh, and if you're not familiar with the good X (the Australian one), you might see if Emusic has the song "Halfway Round the World" (it's on a compilation, so maybe).

Bina: sadly, this artist/album is not on Emusic.

Wombat: I wrote a short bio for Arto last month and listened to some o' that Brazilan stuff--I liked it. Good suggestion.

Alan: Wordy word on THL, and I have been wondering about WTG--it was just reissued recently.

Bob: They got the Dents, but no Aussie X.

Thanks, all, and keep 'em coming.

eMusic has all 3 of my current best-of-'07 picks: the new rekkids from Andrew Bird, Kristin Hersh, and Ted Leo. Also lately emusically digging The Strays, Relay, Ela, and intrigued by what I've heard of Apostle of Hustle. The new Bonnie Prince Billie soujnded pretty good after one time through, too.

Paula, eMusic does have two albums by the Australian band called X, including one with the song that Bob recommends: http://www.emusic.com/album/10918/10918687.html Quitting eMusic? I have been considering doing the exact opposite -- increasing my monthly downloads. At the risk of repeating myself, the album Fix My Brain by the Marked Men was one of the best I heard in 2006.

God Knows I'm Good - a very old Bowie song from 1969

I Slip on Rainbows by Maggie Connell
br>Viola by Girlyman

anything by Fred Neil

John Hiatt, Bring the Family - the whole album

Get Sunset Boulevard by Kim Fowley, which has never come out on CD but has been quietly available on eMusic for years. Bizarre yet hummable, it's sui generis like nobody's business.

I have 90 downloads a month on emusic and I deal with the overload by treating it like a giant cutout bin. Every album is an investment of maybe $2-3 so I never pre-listen to anything on emusic and only download whole albums. I've found that folks I talk to who pick individual songs each month for their downloads kind of burn out a bit on emusic and see it as more of a chore or don't use all their downloads. I just read reviews and then indiscriminately download the whole album if it sounds interesting. Sometimes this gets me some boring albums but it also pays off in downloading stuff that is really interesting that I probably wouldn't have downloaded if I micromanaged my downloads.

It's also good for downloading music you already know but don't have or don't have in a way that's easily turned into mp3s. I got all the Luaka Bop stuff that I like but bought 15 years ago on cassette. You can also use it download stuff that you want but don't necessarily have to listen to as an album, like all the great stuff on the Ethiopiques series is good to have and I love when it pops up on shuffle, but I never sit down and listen to the actual albums. I tend to download one of those per month if I have spare downloads. After I'm done with them then I'm starting on the Folkways series.

And thanks for mentioning my new album! I'm thinking of putting that up on emusic one of these days.

Dave: that's an interesting way to approach it, but I feel like I want to go back to listening to albums, and really getting to know songs again. I know every note, every scratch, of all the vinyl albums I had when I was a kid, and can sing along to filler.

These days, I barely remember individual tracks from albums on my "best of the year" list.

Anyway, thank you for all the download suggestions! I took each of them to heart; some of the suggestions were either things I had already or just not available on Emusic, and I also downloaded some things from my "save for later" list and a couple of long, atmospheric new agey tracks for my "falling asleep" playlist.

But anyway, here are some of the artists I got:

Tanya Donelly
The Twilight Singers
Matthew Sweet
Ted Leo / Pharmacists
Graham Parker
Deerhunter
Jimi Hendrix
Luiz Bonfa
The Staple Singers
Jean Knight
Mika Miko
X (Australia) (spelled "Austrailia" by Emusic)
Apostle Of Hustle
Andrew Bird
The Marked Men
Girlyman
Kim Fowley
