Have to agree on Marquee Moon. It's one of the few songs over 5 minutes that's good from beginning to end... also the very first CD I bought.

Me three. It's perfect. Somehow that guitar solo is as narratively compelling as the singing. You can't wait to hear what happens next, and you end up memorizing the twists and turns like you would a set of lyrics. By the way, I think this is a good category for further investigation, maybe even a top ten. I would nominate Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

Philip: I wouldn't definitely put Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding in the top ten in the over 5 minutes category. Friends slam me on the Elton John thing--I blogged about Captain Fantastic a while back and caught abuse, but We All Fall In Love Sometimes/Curtains (technically 2 songs also) is a perfect segue and one is lessened by the absence of the other. In regards to Elton's Disney soundtracks--they're really not my cup of tea, BUT, I can't criticize them either.

Greg: did you mean to write "would" in that first line?

"Funeral or a Friend/LLB" is great--I vaguely recall having a sort of staged pantomime-ish thing I would perform while listening to it as a child.

Sadly, I have decreasingly less patience with long (rock) songs, but I usually still enjoy "Cicatriz ESP" by the Mars Volta. The passion and beautiful craftsmanship take the edge of the indulgence.

Duh... I did mean "would."
