Instantly started thinking of Pleasant Valley Sunday with Friendly Valley Monkeys...

I'm intrigued by people who are clearly insecure but good performers anyway, it seems to prove an axiom about charisma that I can't quite put my finger on. I would call this the Mary Lorson Phenomenon. In audience patter she openly berates herself for "mistakes" she is making that are entirely undetectable by anyone but herself and maybe her producer. And yet, she ends up coming off so endearing and engrossing (well, superior talent may just prevail over all). I have a combined dangerous idea/anti-Knut proposition: "Ahh! That Knut Car Smell!"

Greg: I've got a dangerous idea related to all this: Humans haven't yet biologically adapted to our lifestyle and it causes physical, mental and emotional stress that we then have to treat the symptoms of with science and medicine. I wouldn't rate that a "dangerous idea" so much as an observations "so unquestionably true as to be painfully obvious."

My comment, now posted, seems unintentionally snide. I don't think your point, Greg, is obvious as in trite, it's really quite different: I find it undoubtedly so and yet for some reason, apparently not universally grasped and acknowledged. I think that's what I meant.

Incidentally, it seems that for some reason, diaryland's maximum listable number of comments is 71 - or at least, yesterday's thread has said there are 71 comments for quite a while, during which a whole bunch of other comments have posted. Damn, Paula but you're popular...

The comments number is up in the 80s now, it just took Diaryland a little while to catch up. And it's not so much that I'm popular so much as people love to argue!

I disagree.

I'm not sure if Eric Mingus used to date Karen Mantler (Carla Bley's daughter) or if he just played in her band, but he may very well have honed his insecure/charisma chops with her: she took the insecure thing to some kind of Andy Kaufman-esque territory when I saw her years ago.

Bob: That's not an argument; that's just contradiction! Argument is an intellectual process, a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of any statement the other person makes! Oh, sorry: time's up.

Hee....that's interesting. I've never heard her play live, but I have always liked her songs about her cat.

"Arrr-nold..." I liked the song about green beans, too.
