Union Carbide? that's a terrible name for a band, given the Bhopal tragedy. You might as well name a band "The Holocaust" or "Mai Lay Massacre".

UCP went on to become Soundtrack of Our Lives--great albums and the few times I saw them live were damn near the best live shows I've seen in the last 10 years.

UCP became Soundtrack of Our Lives--who had about the best live shows I've seen in the last 10 to 15 years. Bina--right up there with Brian Jonestown Massacre, Joy Division and a thousand other tasteless names. No sacred cows...

Yeah, it's a European punk band. They were being, you know, ironic and punky.

So I'm still waiting to hear about the punk band that ironically called itself "The Holocaust".

Or how about "911 Pilots"? Coz that would be, you know, so cool and ironic and stuff.

The Holocaust

Bina--the punk and metal thing... there always has been a shock factor, from Maltese Crosses and swastikas, full Nazi uniforms (Keith Moon of the Who did that also). If nothing else they are equal opportunity offenders. Joy Division and New Order--direct references to the Third Reich etc.

Paula--I think the Stooges comparisons are about as accurate as can be made about UCP and SoOL. It's more in the guitars than anything else, but the live shows were pretty nutty... not on the Iggy level of insanity, but really out there.

Bina--sounds like the band name has upsetting associations for you, and I hate that you might be feeling some pain about it.

I know there are certain topics/words/images that really upset me. Just a few weeks ago I saw an album cover that upset me, I was surprised how much it did. It just went beyond "artistic statement" and into the realm of "hurtful and violent."

So I'm truly sorry that UCP's name offended you; I wasn't defending it in my comment above, just offering an explanation (and a sarcastic one at that).

Thanks, Paula. I appreciate that. It's not that I was directly affected by the Union Carbide disaster - although something like that could easily happen where I live, as MNCs are completely careless and uncaring about the people and the environment. I remember looking at those pictures as a teenager and really freaking out - they were so very graphic. Anyway, point taken about equal opportunity offenders, too. Thanks, guys.
