M is for the Mudflaps you gave me for my Pick-up truck... Okay no channeling Jerry Jeff Walker. Mother--Most important lessons Mom taught me: 1) That unless your last name is Rockefeller you're going to work until you die. Once you accept that you'll be a lot happier because it's not like you're the only one anyway. 2) Sometimes the most disturbing things are also the funniest. 3) Laugh at yourself because everybody else already is. In nearly every crushing failure is a very amusing anecdote. Complicated is a good way to describe my relationship with my mother--and I've come to think that's true of everybody--but her contributions to who I am as an adult comprise most of what I would consider my most positive traits and virtues. Happy Mother's Day.

My mom was unfailingly kind. I thought she was klutzy and naive and uncool at various stages of my growing-up, but I'd gratefully trade in whatever scanty sophistication I picked up elsewhere to have a great big heart like hers. I guess in heaven every day is Mother's Day, so I don't need to send her special greetings anymore.

Janet: stating the obvious here, dude, but there aren't many people kinder than you, so I think she successffully passed on that trait.

Greg: I really like #2. Your mom sounds cool.

My mom took my side when I wanted to go to America for college but my dad didn't want to send me because his fmaily was too conservative. She always told me that the most important thing in the world was to have an education and be independent. And she bought me this beautiful prom dress when I was thirteen and let me wear it behind my dad's back even though it was too short. Mom, you're the greatest!

The relationship with mom ...hmm, yes, complicated.
Still and all, I love her, as any good son should; and she certainly imbued me with a certain sense of duty and responsibility that I otherwise would most certainly lack. Also a certain amount of independence; I cook for myself, and am more than capable of doing my own domestic chores, due in part to her efforts. My mother also encouraged me to read, but I can't recall her ever reading to me; we did for ourselves in the Knotkers household.
Also, those who know us both claim we share a certain easy amiability, although I don't see it myself (at least, not in my own person).
From the Holiday Viewing Dept., two movies for Mother's Day: Santa Sangre and Brand Upon The Brain!, two delightful tales of a boys' love for his mother!

Mothers Day 2007--Walking down a pollen drenched 5th Avenue in No Park Slope yesterday with a friend. We ducked into a bar to use the facilities and there were a half dozen gay men perched on barstools intently watching Mommie Dearest--all very serious and somber--and totally unappreciative of my laughter.

My mom had a great cackle that she unleashed often. When truly delighted, she would snort as well. "Five cackles and a snort!" my dad would proclaim. And then she laughed harder.

Santa Sangre on Mother's Day?!! That's the most twistedly brilliant thing i've ever heard! Man i wish i read this two weeks ago.

My mom is a Jehova's Witness.
