James Blackshaw certainly does some compelling music -- but you must have some sort of unnaturally high haunting tolerance if your record is just 12 hours; my own personal best on that front probably runs into years...

there is almost always some kind of moral lesson, it gets maudlin and uncomfortably serious I think this is known in the sitcom world as VSE disease. As in "Very Special Episode".

Yeah, it gets pretty "special" at times.

I believe sitcom writers also call it "The Moment of Shit." It's that part at the end where there's sharin', there's learnin', there's huggin'.

I have a serious problem with the VSE or MOS in sitcoms. It evokes the same revulsion in me as televangelists and seems quite pointless. The lessons are generally rather obvious and rarely thought provoking or controversial. Perhaps it gives some sense of validation to those who agree, but it's mostly a self congratulatory wankfest for the writers and actors. Who really needs their morals sandwiched between adverts for toothpaste and tampons? "Wow, perhaps I've been wrong on this whole race issue. Damn, I feel so enlightened I'm going to run out right now and get a brighter, fresher smile!"

I think it's kind of quaint...It's certainly not done much these days.

I just think it's a bit heavy-handed. On the other heavy hand, however, I'm not thrilled with a lot of what passes for comedy now either--too mean-spirited. I guess I'd still rather see the VSE/MOS--especially given that when you do try to voice a positive or thoughtful message it is often so quickly politicized and criticized by the right.
