This meeting between the Thin White Duke and The Fonz is pretty classic '70s talk show -- there's a look Bowie gives Winkler about a minute in that's just hilarious; but once you get over the initial kistchiness of it all, Bowie comes across as very articulate; and actually manages to talk about something substantive and meaningful there for a moment -- a rarity for TV, of any era.

Honestly, I couldn't get past the first 15 seconds, with Henry Winkler's quease-making insecurity. But there is a wonderful clip from that same show, where Bowie's doing "Stay".

Looked sort of like rehearsal for Barry Zuckerkorn... Anyway, I was amused by the decor - and by the fact that at the time, probably nobody batted an eye that Bowie's smoking a cigarette. You wouldn't see that now. This looks to be circa _Station to Station_, no? His doing "Stay" would suggest that as well. Bowie is indeed fairly articulate...considering he was probably also fourteen kinds of high.

There are fourteen kinds of high? Shoot! Looks like I missed a few.

I made it all the way to the end; as a person who makes his living editing TV, I've steeled myself to be able to stare down hours of this kind of crap.

I loved that, thank you. This world today could certainly use more of Dinah's old-school civility and gentle interest in what her guests had to say. And that stuff Bowie says about love v. in love is totally deep!

PS: Of course I jhad to go to YouTube and watch the "Stay" clip -- "smokin'!" as we used to say back in the '70s. I had forgotten, but that is one monstrous groove.

David Bowie is pure class. Beauty as well as intelligence. Sigh...
